Old Macau

2007_12_28_038

This week we had a holiday week in China. We headed to Macau for some great food, fun and some history too. We love the old Macau and it is becoming quite hidden behind the glitter and glitz of the mega casinos with the mega malls and hotels. It is still there you just have to look, or be willing to look for the old Macau. Hubby and I have both loved history all of our lives,we met in a history class in college in fact. We spent many trips in Macau with our very young children and now with our son who is a bit older we are experiencing it again and hopefully passing a love for the beauty of historical churches, lighthouses and forts on to our son.

We went on one of our favorite walks from the Guia lighthouse down through a lovely park Flora Garden, this time we veered in the opposite direction that we usually take and walked to Montanha Russa Gardens, we walked through the Presbyterian Cemetery many historical looking old headstones there, interesting to read the names and dates of those who lived lives in Macau from all over the world. Then just up the street we headed on to the Kun Iam Tong Temple this was a impressive Buddhist temple. There was a lot of incense burning at the temple that day,I had to turn back from my investigation as my lungs were burning from all the smoke and scent,so I stayed out in the courtyard and enjoyed the light breeze and the shade of an old banyan tree while hubby and son investigated the temple. From the temple we headed to Colina de Mong-Ha  a fort that was built in case of attack from the Chinese that never happened, however in between the buildings we spied the old border gate which was a nice surprise.

Another nice surprise that we had on this walk was finding a small cafe that served some great Portuguese food  we cannot remember the name exactly, but will take that walk again and definitely stop in the cafe again.

A trip to Macau with my boys is not a trip without a stop at the Grand Prix Museum which is always interesting as I enjoy looking at the race cars especially the older ones. We also stopped in the wine museum which focuses on wine and port made in Portugal and of course there was a tasting of wine or port before you leave, that is always nice.

We headed to the Cirque du Soleil  Zaia one evening and were thoroughly entertained. This was a suggestion that I made and really had to talk Hubby into getting the tickets for this and going. We all went and it was enjoyed tremendously by all of us. I was so amazed at the talent not only of the acrobatic performers but also of the musicians and singers. Amazing voices! The other performers were all wonderful actors and actresses as well as being amazing athletes! If you get the chance to see a show by this outfit, do see one I am sure you will be impressed.

We had a lovely time in Macau as always, had a lot of fun and a too much food, wine and port. It was all good and now we are looking forward to the next trip back to Macau.
